Keeping it simple

Cleaning your jewelry is one of those tasks that sounds like a complete faff but then turns out to be really straightforward — and you don’t need a lot of fancy equipment to do an effective job. If you love gadgets then by all means invest in one of those professional ultrasonic jewelry cleaners; otherwise, you can achieve a satisfying sparkle with nothing more than some gentle detergent, warm water, a baby toothbrush and a soft cloth.

These precious metals respond well to a warm bath. Soak gold and silver jewelry for five minutes or so in a basin of lukewarm (not hot) water with a little mild dish soap, and scrub gently with a soft-bristle baby toothbrush to dislodge any dirt before rinsing in warm water.

How to make diamonds sparkle

Diamonds, like other hard gemstones, can be safely submerged in water and cleaned with a soft baby toothbrush. We’ve also heard that seltzer water works wonders thanks to the carbonation.

Take extra care when cleaning the fittings to make sure that none of the stones comes loose.

Go easy on your pearls

We love working with pearls; they’re a big part of our Filipino heritage, and they add a luminous quality to any piece. They are very porous, though, so over-enthusiastic cleaning can strip them of their luster. We recommend wiping pearls with a soft cloth to get rid of oil and body lotion; and it’s a good to get into the habit of wiping them down gently after every wear.
